Player Write Up

Jack Burnham | Class of 2027 | Ida B. Wells High School | Portland, OR

Height/Weight: 6’7”, 225 lbs.

Primary Position: LHP | Secondary Position: 1B | Bats/Throws: L/L

Jack Burnham presents an imposing 6'7", long-levered frame that immediately creates intrigue on the mound. His size allows him to create significant downhill angle from a three-quarter arm slot, and there is substantial physical projection remaining as he continues to develop. He works from the third-base side of the rubber and brings a methodical, cerebral approach to his preparation and pitching.

Burnham works primarily with a four-seam fastball, slider, and changeup. His fastball sits 82-84 mph and has topped out at 88, but the combination of his long levers and downhill angle allows the pitch to play up. The ball gets on hitters quickly, particularly when he is able to establish the fastball early in counts. His 69-72 mph curveball and 72 mph changeup give him additional weapons, with the slider currently providing the most effective pairing with the fastball. When Burnham tunnels the two pitches effectively, the combination can be difficult for hitters to recognize and handle.

Burnham also shows developing ability to control the running game. He varies his looks and can switch between a slide step and leg kick, giving him multiple ways to keep runners from getting comfortable. His ability to make adjustments during outings is another positive indicator of his pitching aptitude. Continued refinement of his delivery, command, and ability to consistently execute his secondary pitches should allow his present arsenal to play at an even higher level.

Makeup: Burnham is a cerebral pitcher who takes preparation seriously and is constantly looking for adjustments that can make him more effective. His methodical approach allows him to process what is happening on the mound and make changes rather than simply repeating the same approach. That combination of preparation, self-awareness, and willingness to adjust is particularly encouraging given his physical projection.

Overall: Burnham's 6'7" frame and long levers give him a unique foundation to develop as a pitching prospect. The 82-84 mph fastball plays with added life because of the angle and perceived velocity created by his delivery, while the slider gives him a legitimate secondary weapon when properly tunneled off the fastball. His changeup provides another avenue to attack hitters, and his ability to vary looks with runners on shows developing pitching intelligence. Continued physical development and refinement of his command and secondary offerings could significantly raise his ceiling. The combination of size, angle, pitchability, and cerebral approach makes Burnham an intriguing arm to continue following.
