Height/Weight: 5'10", 160 lbs.
Primary Position: C | Secondary Position: RHP | Bats/Throws: R/R
Ryan Gresham presents an athletic, increasingly physical frame. His ability to impact the game behind the plate, at the plate, and on the mound give the ability to impact games in multiple ways.
Offense: Gresham brings an aggressive, power-oriented approach to the box and has the ability to drive the baseball to all fields. He works from a tall setup with a small leg lift and gets his hands into the zone quickly, creating a compact path with natural backspin and lift. His gap-to-gap ability stands out, and the developing power gives him the potential to become a legitimate run-producing bat. Improving his contact rate and reducing his strikeout rate will be important as he faces better pitching, but the underlying offensive tools are evident.
Defense: Catcher is currently the carrying component of Gresham's profile. He shows advanced receiving and blocking ability, with quick hands, athletic footwork, and a fast recovery after pitches in the dirt. He does an excellent job keeping the baseball close and quickly getting himself into position to make the next play. His ability to process the game and work efficiently behind the plate is particularly impressive. He also shows a solid receiving foundation and the ability to steal strikes for his pitchers.
Pitching: He is a heavy strike thrower who works from a three-quarter arm slot and features a fastball that currently reaches 81mph with arm-side run. His off-speed offerings provide above-average separation and give him the ability to keep hitters off balance. He has shown the ability to fill the zone with multiple pitches, and continued development of command and pitch sequencing will determine how much the pitching profile progresses. The combination of strike-throwing ability, movement, and feel for his secondary pitches makes him an interesting secondary pitching option.
Makeup: Gresham plays with confidence and composure while maintaining a steady, positive presence. His consistent effort make him a reliable teammate and competitor. The baseball IQ is evident in the way he handles situations behind the plate, on the bases, and at the plate. He appears to understand not only what he is trying to accomplish, but why he is trying to accomplish it.
Overall: The primary offensive development points will be improving contact consistency and reducing strikeouts, while continued physical development should help all of his tools play at a higher level.
