Tanner Carlsen presents a tall, physical presence on the mound with a frame that gives him a strong foundation for continued development. He works from the third-base side of the rubber and shows good pace throughout his delivery. His ability to create angle down the mound, combined with a present fastball up to 91 mph, gives him a legitimate foundation as a pitching prospect.
Carlsen works primarily off a four-seam fastball and 12-6 curveball, with the ability to incorporate both a slider and changeup depending on the hitter. His fastball sits 85-89 mph and has topped at 91, giving him enough velocity to challenge hitters when he is ahead in the count. His 74 mph curveball has quality 12-6 shape and is at its best when he can tunnel it effectively off the four-seam. He also shows a 77 mph slider that he prefers against right-handed hitters and a 73-76 mph changeup that he uses primarily against left-handed hitters. The ability to vary his secondary offerings gives him options, but his most effective combination currently comes from establishing the four-seam and creating separation with the curveball.
Carlsen's biggest developmental priority is his execution from the stretch. He can rush his delivery with runners on base, which leads to increased fastball misses and takes away from some of the command he shows from the windup. He does a good job varying his looks and can move between a slide step and higher leg kick, giving him multiple ways to control the running game. Improving the consistency of his delivery from the stretch should allow his present arsenal to play at a higher level.
Makeup: Carlsen shows a good understanding of how to attack hitters and uses his arsenal with purpose rather than simply throwing pitches. His willingness to change looks and utilize different secondary pitches based on the hitter shows developing pitching intelligence. Continued attention to the details of his delivery and execution with runners on will be important as he faces more advanced competition.
Overall: Carlsen has the physical presence, velocity, and pitch mix to develop into a legitimate next-level arm. The 85-89 mph four-seam with a 91 mph top end gives him a strong foundation, while the 12-6 curveball provides his best secondary weapon and pairs naturally with the fastball. The slider and changeup give him additional tools and allow him to attack different handed hitters. If he can clean up his delivery from the stretch and maintain the same tempo and direction he shows from the windup, his command and overall pitchability should take a significant step forward. The combination of present velocity, physical projection, and feel for tunneling gives Carlsen an intriguing ceiling as he continues to develop.
